Director Joo Young Lee, who wrote the script and directed CoupangPlay's 'Anna', has lost his lawsuit against the streaming platform. The Korean court ruled against him in the first trial on October 20th.
According to legal sources, the Seoul Central District Court's Civil Conciliation Division 61 ruled in favor of Coupang and production company ContentsMap in a copyright infringement and prohibition of infringement lawsuit filed by Director Lee.
Director Lee had previously filed a lawsuit against Coupang and ContentsMap in September 2022, claiming that his work was damaged due to unilateral editing without his consent. He also demanded 100 million won in compensation for the violation of his personality rights and name removal from the credit roll.

In response, CoupangPlay stated, "We have requested specific modifications over the past few months, but Director Lee refused to comply. Therefore, with the consent of the production company and in accordance with our rights stated in the contract, we edited the work to align with the original intention of the production."
CoupangPlay also released the director's cut of 'Anna' in August 2022, just a month after the original release.
The court stated, "The director only provided materials for review right before the first editing meeting, just two months before the broadcast. After that, CoupangPlay provided over 80 modifications, but Director Lee refused to make any changes."
CoupangPlay argued that the editing of 'Anna' was not a violation of the essence of the work, and that not crediting the director in the credit roll would be a breach of contract.
In my opinion, it is understandable that Director Lee would feel frustrated and disappointed with the unilateral editing of his work. However, as a streaming platform, CoupangPlay has the right to make necessary modifications to ensure the quality and success of their content. It is also important to respect the terms stated in the contract. Hopefully, both parties can come to a mutual understanding and continue to collaborate in the future.
