# Emma Stone, Yellowface, and the Oscars: A Moment of Honor or Shame?

The 96th Academy Awards ceremony held on February 10th at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California was a night of celebration for many talented actors and filmmakers. Among the winners was Emma Stone, who took home the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in "La La Land." However, her win was not without controversy, as it brought to light the issue of yellowface and racial discrimination in the film industry.

The controversy began when presenter and previous year's Best Supporting Actor winner, Bong Joon-ho, handed the trophy to Emma Stone without exchanging any words or gestures with her. This was seen by some as a deliberate snub towards Bong, who is of Asian descent. The incident sparked a debate on social media, with many accusing Stone of "yellowface" and cultural appropriation.

But the controversy did not end there. As the night went on, another incident involving a previous year's winner and a presenter unfolded. When Robert Downey Jr. presented the award for Best Visual Effects, he did not acknowledge the previous year's winner, Vietnamese-American actress Kelly Marie Tran. This further fueled the accusations of racism and discrimination in the film industry.

In the midst of all this, Korean-American actor Steven Yeun took to his official Instagram account to address the issue. In a post congratulating Emma Stone on her win, he indirectly addressed the controversy by mentioning how she may have caused confusion but still shared a proud moment with her friend and fellow nominee, Jennifer Lawrence. He also added a message of unity, saying "let's always support each other."

As an Asian-American, I cannot help but feel disappointed and frustrated by these incidents. It is disheartening to see that even in a diverse and inclusive industry like Hollywood, racism and discrimination still exist. And it is even more disheartening to see that these incidents are being brushed off as mere misunderstandings or coincidences.

The issue of yellowface and the lack of representation for people of color in the film industry is not a new one. It has been a long-standing problem that needs to be addressed and actively fought against. And as we celebrate the achievements of talented actors like Emma Stone, we must also acknowledge and work towards creating a more inclusive and diverse industry for all.

In conclusion, while Emma Stone's win at the Oscars may have been a moment of honor for her, it also shed light on the ongoing issue of yellowface and discrimination in Hollywood. It is up to all of us to actively address and fight against these issues, and to support and uplift each other regardless of race or ethnicity. Let's make sure that the Oscars, and the film industry as a whole, truly represent and celebrate the diversity of our world.
