'Korean War with the Mongols' Despite Historical Distortion Controversy 10.9%...High-Level Psychological Warfare
# The Controversial Korean War Drama "Korean War: Mongols vs. Korea" Continues to Draw High Ratings
The recent KBS 2TV drama "Korean War: Mongols vs. Korea" has been making headlines for its controversial portrayal of the historical event. Despite the criticism, the drama has been recording high ratings, with the latest episode reaching 9.6% (based on Nielsen Korea's nationwide ratings).
In the 21st episode, the drama depicted the intense psychological warfare between Korea and the invading Mongols as they both tried to gain the upper hand in the war. The highlight of the episode was the scene where Queen Wonjeong (played by Lee Si-ah) tried to convince her father-in-law, Kim Eun-boo (played by Jo Seung-yeon), to send a spy to the Mongol Empire. This scene recorded the highest ratings of 10.9% (based on nationwide ratings).
In this episode, Hyun-jong (played by Kim Dong-jun) confronted the powerful Kang clan and their leader, Kang Kam-chan (played by Choi Soo-jong). Despite their disrespectful behavior, Hyun-jong stood his ground and declared that he would send a spy to the Mongol Empire. He even challenged them to kill him, stating that he would rather die than let them control Korea. This intense confrontation added to the tension of the episode.
Meanwhile, Kim Eun-boo, who had been reinstated as the prime minister, met with Kang Kam-chan in secret to discuss their plans for reforming the country. However, their meeting was interrupted by a messenger from the Mongol Empire, who informed them that the Mongols were planning to attack the capital city of Gaegyeong.
The Mongol messenger then asked Hyun-jong when he planned to visit the Mongol Empire and pay tribute. Hyun-jong replied that he would wait until the war was over, refusing to give in to their demands. The messenger continued to pressure him, stating that the Mongol army had been fighting on Korean soil because they trusted the promise of tribute from the Korean king. However, Hyun-jong stood his ground and refused to give in to their demands.
As a Korean-American, I have been eagerly following this drama and have been impressed by its ability to seamlessly integrate historical facts with fictional elements. The psychological warfare between Korea and the Mongols has been portrayed in a gripping and realistic manner, making it an engaging watch for viewers. However, I do understand the concerns raised by some about the potential historical distortion in the drama. As a fan of both Korean history and dramas, I hope that the creators of "Korean War: Mongols vs. Korea" continue to stay true to the facts while delivering an entertaining and thought-provoking drama.
