[MyDaily = Reporter Nam Hye-yeon] The ongoing noise and protests. Just a while ago, it was a hot topic with the drama that was supposed to save KBS and the actors who appeared in it, but suddenly, the controversy took center stage and viewers were left feeling exhausted.
The decision to cancel the broadcast of 'Korean War' in order to improve its quality was announced, but the question remains whether it will be able to capture the attention of viewers who have already lost interest.
On the 27th, KBS announced on the viewer petition board, "We are preparing for a Sunday special broadcast during the Lunar New Year holiday for 'Korean War' and the regular broadcast will be cancelled for one week. We will do our best to create a high-quality production during this time." KBS also made it clear that all scripts for 'Korean War' were written by writer Lee Jung-woo, who conducted thorough research and consulted with experts from the first episode to the 20th episode. They emphasized that there should be no misunderstandings about this. They also added, "Through the remaining episodes, we will depict the patriotic spirit of King Hyun-jong and General Kang Gam-chan, who fought off external invasions and brought peace to Northeast Asia, with great detail."
Meanwhile, the controversy surrounding 'Korean War' began in episodes 17 and 18. In the final scene, King Hyun-jong, who was in conflict with Kang Gam-chan, falls off his horse and dies, causing an uproar among viewers who criticized the portrayal of King Hyun-jong as a weak character. The author of the novel, Gil Seung-soo, also expressed concerns about historical distortion, and the production team even released behind-the-scenes footage. In response to this, KBS stated that they will continue to follow the same process for scriptwriting in the future.
As a Korean War veteran, I have been eagerly anticipating the broadcast of 'Korean War' on KBS. However, I cannot help but feel disappointed by the recent controversies surrounding the drama. As a viewer, I hope that the remaining episodes will accurately depict the bravery and sacrifices of our ancestors during the Korean War, without any distortions or controversies. I also urge the production team to take into consideration the opinions of experts and historians in order to create a more historically accurate and meaningful drama. Let us not forget the importance of portraying our history with respect and accuracy, especially on a national broadcast channel like KBS. I hope that 'Korean War' will be remembered as a well-made and impactful drama, rather than one that caused controversy and disappointment."
