KBS 'The War of the Korean Empire'
The highly anticipated KBS2 drama 'The War of the Korean Empire' has been caught up in unexpected controversy, despite its revival as a traditional historical drama on KBS.
On January 15, 2024, Gil Seung-soo, the original writer of 'The War of the Korean Empire', posted a blog post expressing his dissatisfaction with the drama's content. He revealed the original plot after the death of General Yang Kyu in episode 16, criticizing the portrayal of King Hyun-jong as a foolish character and stating, "They are making the most renowned general in Korean history look like a fool." This has caused quite a stir among viewers and even earned the drama the title of 'KoreanDramaFail'.
The recent episode of 'The War of the Korean Empire' has also sparked heated discussions on a historical community forum. One member who claimed to have watched the drama wrote, "Something seems off about the drama. Even before episode 17, there were some parts that didn't fit, but it wasn't this bad." This post also revealed a conversation with Gil Seung-soo, who stated that the actors were not at fault, but rather the script failed to follow the original plot. The acting of Kim Dong-joon, who plays King Hyun-jong, was praised, but the script failed to do it justice. The post ended with the member stating their decision to stop watching the drama, in order to avoid getting 'KoreanDramaFail' syndrome.
In the previous week's episodes 17 and 18 of 'The War of the Korean Empire', tensions rose between King Hyun-jong and General Kang Gam-chan (Choi Soo-jong) as they clashed over reforms and the second invasion of the Khitan. In a fit of rage, King Hyun-jong orders General Kang to leave the capital, but in the process, he gets into an accident and falls into a coma. This scene has been deemed by viewers as a 'KoreanDramaFail' for its unrealistic and forced plot development.
As a fan of historical dramas, I had high hopes for 'The War of the Korean Empire' and was excited for its revival on KBS. However, the recent controversies and questionable plot developments have left me disappointed. It's a shame that such a promising drama has fallen into the trap of 'KoreanDramaFail'. I hope that the production team will take into account the feedback from viewers and the original writer to improve the quality of the drama. In the meantime, I'll be taking a break from watching to avoid getting 'KoreanDramaFail' syndrome myself."
