From 'Hong Kim Dongjeon' to 'The War of the Korean Empire', the dissatisfaction of viewers towards KBS is reaching a boiling point.
Since the death of General Yang Gyu in episode 16, there has been a constant stream of criticism surrounding KBS 2TV's historical drama 'The War of the Korean Empire'. Viewers have expressed their disappointment and frustration with the plot and certain elements, and even the original novel's author, Gil Seung-soo, has joined in with strong criticism.
Amidst the growing conflict, a petition on the KBS website titled 'Petition to Stick to the Original Storyline in the Drama 'The War of the Korean Empire'' has garnered over 1,000 signatures. In response, the production team, now obligated to address the issue, explained that for a relatively unknown period in history like the Goryeo era, the writer's imagination is necessary to fill in the gaps. They also assured that they are working closely with historical experts and references to avoid exaggeration and distortion in the storyline.
They also mentioned that the original novel, 'The War of the Korean Empire', was used as a reference for battle scenes and other historical details. However, they clarified that the drama's content is a new creation, based on research and consultations with experts. They asked viewers to continue watching the remaining episodes to see how they will further develop the character of King Seongjong with accuracy and authenticity.

However, the production team's explanation did not appease the angry fans. On the 26th, a truck protest began in front of KBS headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul. The truck was adorned with signs that read 'Distorting History, Terrible Plot. Is this a Historical Drama? Don't use the original novel as an excuse to manipulate public opinion', 'The War of the Korean Empire ruined by a poorly written script. The issue is not the original novel, but the distortion of history', 'Distorting History, Terrible Plot. The responsibility lies with the actors and staff'.
As a fan of historical dramas, I understand the frustration of viewers who are disappointed with the direction of the drama. However, I also believe that it is important to give the production team the benefit of the doubt and trust that they are doing their best to create a compelling and accurate portrayal of the Goryeo era. As the drama continues, I hope that the backlash will subside and we can appreciate the hard work and dedication of the cast and crew.
