Renowned webtoon artist Joo Ho-min recently made headlines as he revealed his son's experience with child abuse and shared his thoughts on the first trial verdict.
On January 1st, Judge Kwak Yong-heon of the Suwon District Court sentenced A, the accused, to a suspended fine of 2 million won for violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes.
During the fourth trial on November 4th, the court had found A guilty based on over 150 recorded conversations, where A repeatedly used phrases like "you're so annoying," "I'm talking about you," "ugh, I hate you," and "I hate you so much" towards his son who has autism.
Judge Kwak stated, "The unnecessary and inappropriate expressions used by the accused while teaching his son with autism could have conveyed his negative emotions and attitude towards the victim." He also added that A's behavior could have caused psychological harm to his son.
However, A's lawyer plans to appeal the verdict, stating that his client was not aware of his son's disability and that his actions were not intended to harm him.
Joo Ho-min appeared on CBS Radio's "Kim Hyun-jung's News Show" on February 2nd and shared his thoughts on the trial. He was deeply moved by A's lawyer's argument that "a child with a disability cannot understand abuse." Joo Ho-min stated, "Even a dog can sense the atmosphere, and especially children with autism are more sensitive to negative energy."
As a parent, I cannot imagine the pain and fear Joo Ho-min must have felt upon learning about his son's experience. It is heartbreaking to see a child suffer at the hands of someone they trust and depend on. I applaud Joo Ho-min for speaking up and bringing attention to this important issue.
